It’s been a while since we created a new post. Recently we did something that I think is worth sharing; we put to bed the idea that you cannot fly with your magnet when you travel.
First, this was NOT for an international flight so I speak only from the experience of flying from one US state to another; specifically Massachusetts to Florida and back. Any recommendations made are exclusively for travel within the US.
Now that’s out of the way, we can get into it.
We went to Florida recently and coincidentally, it was during one of the same days as Global Magnet Fishing Day. Before leaving we had made arrangements with some friends down there (Travis from Treasure Coast Magnet Fishing, Nick from Magnet Junkie and Aaron from Magnetic Troll) to meet up at an old abandoned lock. But first, we had to get there.
I called the TSA and Delta, both confidently told me I could travel with the magnet as long as it was part of my carry-on; I carried it as my personal item. I had a case from Kratos and since I was bringing down the Titan, we put everything together (gloves, rope, scraper) and closed up the case.
As I approached the TSA check point I placed the case on the conveyer belt, making sure I made them aware of what the item was. Of course once it was scanned they had questions, so I was taken to the side. Important tip, don’t be rude. This is so simple, you’ll see!
Once we were taken aside I explained what the item was, why I was travelling with it and even gave them a sticker. It also helped I was wearing a hat with our chammel logo on it. They were curious but had also heard of magnet fishing so they understood. They closed the case after inspection and I was on my way.
You cannot get any easier than that!
Remember, you are an ambassador for the hobby. Every interaction you have reflects the rest of us. As long as you are kind and cordial, there should be no issues. Be deliberate and don’t try to hide anything, there is no reason for that. I was as blatant as I could be that what I had was a high powered magnet and I use it for magnet fishing in regards to our YouTube channel.
I was calm, cool and collected; that’s my biggest tip here! If you can make them smile, if you can make them chuckle it just helps ease the amount of time you spend and can make your day of travelling that much more enjoyable.
It’s that simple!!!
