You always remember your first!
Jokes aside, our “first” wasn’t too long ago. We started magnet fishing in July. Our initial order was from Amazon, I figured we’d try a decent beginner set up; two 575lb single sided magnets and two 65ft ropes (1/3″ 5680 lbs limit).
As recommended, we used the included thread lock when the magnets arrived. You need 24 hours for it to fully set. I’d read over and over how important it was; especially so you don’t lose your magnet. If you are just starting out, USE the thread lock! Unless your bank account is fatter than mine and you can shell out cash for a new one; I chose to save cash and listen to the experts. Those same experts remind newbs like us to be safe with the magnet, they are strong and could be dangerous if not taken care of.
The first time out, Colin and I went to Highbank Bridge in Dennis, MA. The spot is a trifecta of magnet fishing locations. It has a boat launch ramp, a pier over the water and also a bridge! It’s become one of our favorite spots. We pulled a few pieces of metal, trivial stuff. Then, Colin pulled an old buck knife. This was exciting!
Needless to say, we are very happy with the purchase. Using it over and over, we’ve learned that the single sided magnet has got a specific use. It’s not quite meant for dragging, but for tamping around the edges of a bridge, pier or boat launch. All sorts of stuff can be found around the edges, it’s where people drop stuff the most.
The short and tall is this, the 575lb single sided magnet is a fantastic beginner magnet, or like I said above, can be used around the edges of a spot. If you are looking to try one out, you can go to Brute Magnetics website and find the kit you are looking for.
